As we take a metaphorical, (or literal), dump in our oceans, lakes and streams, drink our recycled bodily fluids and generally follow a day to day plan of survival that incorporates the SUV and Mini-van as our favored vehicles of mass destruction...something is going on below the surface... Dead Zone

Everything you do has a consequence. Fertilizing your lawn (use milorganite), stuffing 8 D-Cell batteries into your oversized vibrator or pouring that oil change discharge down the storm drain can end up impacting some tiny organism that dies and starts a chain reaction. Do what you can.

Who's the Predator?

The balance between the economic demands of our society and the protection and preservation of various creatures, and the environment in general, is a tenuous and shifting battlefront. In Wyoming the state has petitioned to remove the gray wolf from the endangered species list (background) and to re-designate it a "predator" which can be hunted and killed without regulation (primarily to protect livestock and elk populations). The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service just denied the petition. The Bush administration's move to give regulatory power over the gray wolf back to individual states is short sighted, ill advised and archaic. Wolf populations are transitory, not defined by state's borders and should be managed by a comprehensive Federal or regional plan. Endangered predator populations should not be subject to management by states (Alaska leaps to mind) that place a far higher value on a hunter's right to shoot an elk than an ecosystem's potential to get back a small portion of its natural balance.

A Lake Grows in Florida

I hope this isn't one of those, solve one problem create a bigger one deals. Florida is building a giant resevoir to help protect estuaries and wetlands degraded by manmade dykes, canals and pollution.

The Other Way to Dilute Global Warming...

alter the facts. The House Government Reform Committee chairman, Rep. Tom Davis, R-Va., and the committee's top Democrat, Rep. Henry Waxman of California, said they will request data from the White House and hold hearings into whether the White House Council on Environmental Quality intentionally diluted scientific information on the threat of global warming. We've seen this in the so-called "intelligence" gathering on WMD's in prior to the Iraq war, if the facts don't fit...change'em.

Jellyfish Dominate

In another example of man's altering of natural balances, jellyfish are now dominating the oceans biomass in a region of the Nambian coastal waters. STORY Traditionally the removal of a predator from an ecosystem can have a major impact on it's prey populations. Just checkout that deer in your flowerbed or the dozens of squirrels frolicking in your yard.

A Convenient Alliance

Motivated by the gasping desire for some positive PR, Walmart is going green. Al Gore is going to be speaking to Walmart executives at their quarterly conference next week. Gore obviously sees this as an opportunity to have a positive impact on the culture of the retail behemoth. Regardless of ones opinion of the retail monster on other issues, any good that comes out of Walmart's efforts to "go green" can only be viewed as a tremendous net positive for the environment, . Looks like the Japanese demand for bluefin tuna has driven commercial fishermen to grossly exceed quotas. There are not enough policemen/observers on the ocean to regulate the unscrupulous fishing industry.
